The coup

On 1 February 2021, the State Administration Council (SAC) illegally took power in Myanmar through a military coup. The stated reason for the coup was “election fraud”. This was disputed by independent local civil society and by international election observers.

An illegal election

The SAC has announced that it intends to hand power to a civilian government through elections in 2023.

This is an illegal election as it does not recognise the legal election of 2020, which saw the NLD (National League for Democracy) voted into power. It therefore constitutes a democratic backsliding and will weaken political stability in the region.
