International Center for Not-For-Profit Law (ICNL) published a report detailing the situation of human rights violations against journalists and media in Myanmar, covering the period from February 2021 to February 2024.
As of February 2024, 206 journalists are being detained by the Myanmar junta and they have been sentenced to unfair terms in the prison by sham courts controlled by the junta.
Of the 206 journalists detained:
ICNL called for the international community's attention to the dire situation,
"Stakeholders, including the United Nations internationally and within Myanmar, should strengthen the support for detained journalists and the media, ensuring it adequately reflects their role as the oxygen of the ongoing movement for a return to democratization. Now is also the time for the development of reform proposals for a legitimate government to roll back the military’s attacks on the rights to freedom of expression and association."
