As the Myanmar Junta announced the extension of the state of emergency yet again, we compiled how the national and international community has reacted to the announcement on Twitter.
On July 31, the Myanmar junta prolonged the state of emergency yet again, which was initially imposed in 2021 when the army seized power from the elected government. This extension has resulted in a further postponement of the "elections", which the military had promised to hold after taking control. According to the army-enacted 2008 constitution, the military can govern the country under a state of emergency for one year, with the possibility of two six-month extensions if preparations for new elections are not yet completed. As a result, the initial time limit expired on January 31 of this year. However, in February, the NDSC (National Defense and Security Council) permitted the junta to extend the emergency rule for an additional six months, citing an ongoing abnormal situation in the country. The recent announcement made on Monday marks the fourth extension of the state of emergency.
In fact, "Min Aung Hlaing made comments hinting that he may extend the state of emergency in Burma for another six months in August," reported by DVB on July 17, two weeks before the official announcement.

This would delay any regime planned election, as according to the 2008 constitution they can only be held six months after the /1 #WhatsHappeningInMyanmar pic.twitter.com/sW61bpQ8ca

State of Emergency extension indicates SAC's unwillingness to listen to the call and intention to continue all crimes. It also challenges the slow global action to stop military sponsored violence. Action to stop money, military and legitimacy to SAC. #WhatsHappeningInMyanmar

Myanmar Military extends state of emergency for the fourth time since its coup on 1 Feb 2021. While it is violating its own Constitution, the extension is a clear sign that the junta is not in control of the country but strongly challenged by the pro-democracy resistance. https://t.co/S8r1cDfGJp

Myanmar’s junta extended its state of emergency by 6 months, delaying their plan to hold “elections”. “The nightmare for the Myanmar people is never-ending is the one thing observers should take away from thislatest SAC junta announcement,” said @Reaproy. https://t.co/8OsM84X18E

This simply confirms what the people of #Myanmar have known since the coup began: the junta will never loosen its grip on power.

It also confirms that opposition to military rule is so widespread that the junta can't even pull off a sham election. https://t.co/sRzXA60W8M

Today the Burma military regime extended its state of emergency as it continues its violent repression against the people of Burma. We urge the regime to end the violence and pursue a peaceful and just resolution to the crisis. https://t.co/wHgmjcJ8Jn

Burma’s military regime has extended the state of emergency yet again in the face of widespread opposition to its rule. The regime’s violence is only prolonging the crisis. We will work with our partners and allies to press the regime to respect the will of the people. https://t.co/hIu0aADShu
