According to a report by Reuters, Myanmar military chief Min Aung Hlaing's plans for an "election" were discussed with former Cambodian leader Hun Sen on May 7, 2024, amid growing armed resistance. Although repeatedly promising a return to democracy, the junta has not specified an election date. Hun Sen, who stepped down as Cambodia's prime minister, requested to speak with detained Nobel laureate and State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi. Junta leader Min Aung Hlaing was said to consider the request seriously.

Junta spokesperson Zaw Min Tun also reiterated the commitment to a multi-party democratic "election" stating preparations were underway. The junta's "election" plans hinge on achieving peace and stability, with nationwide elections uncertain. Back in March, Min Aung Hlaing indicated that the said "election" will be held in relevant "sections" (regions) "if the election is not held nationwide under the law."
