Myanmar’s National Unity Government (NUG) and the National Unity Consultative Council (NUCC) have issued a strong statement opposing any interference in Myanmar’s future by external forces. They also declared that the military junta has no legitimacy to organize or oversee elections.

On 24 December, the Joint Anti-Sham Election Working Committee, representing both the NUG and NUCC, released a statement condemning the junta’s preparations for what they described as a fraudulent election.
“The terrorist military junta, which illegitimately nullified the 2020 general election results and seized power unlawfully, has no right to conduct an election,” the statement said.
It also stated that since the junta violated the 2008 Constitution on 1 February 2021, it effectively rendered it void. This aligns with a previous declaration by the Committee Representing the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH), which also declared the constitution invalid.
The statement highlighted key issues, including the junta’s oppression of political parties, the increasing number of internally displaced people due to heavy attacks, and the junta’s forced conscription which has caused many young men to flee. It also states the revolutionary resistance forces’ control of over 90 townships and more than half of Myanmar’s territory as evidence of the junta’s weakening grip on power.
The junta’s failure to conduct a nationwide census in 2024, with data collected from only 80 townships, was also flagged as a major concern.
These factors, the statement argued, make any election under junta control inherently fraudulent, with potential manipulation of voter registration and results through intimidation and coercion.
The NUG and NUCC emphasized that such an election would not address Myanmar’s political crisis or halt the ongoing revolution.
“As long as the military is involved in politics, the people’s dream of a federal democratic union will remain unattainable, and the revolution will continue to gain momentum,” the statement declared.

They reiterated that Myanmar’s future must be determined solely by its people, rejecting any decisions imposed by external actors or the junta. The groups reaffirmed their commitment to dismantling all forms of dictatorship and establishing a federal democratic union as envisioned in the Federal Democratic Charter.
Meanwhile, the military junta has been working to push forward its election plans. It has urged ethnic armed groups to disarm and engage in political dialogue instead of military conflict.
On 19 December, during an informal meeting in Bangkok, junta Foreign Minister U Than Swe briefed representatives from China, Bangladesh, India, Laos, and Thailand on the junta’s population census and election plans.
The junta also announced that China would provide essential support for the election following a visit by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in August.
