On March 13, a Myanmar delegation led by the chair of junta-appointed Union Election Commission visited Russia Federation to observe the presidential election.
During the visit, UEC Chair U Ko Ko also met Ms. Ella Pamfilova, Chair of the Russian Central Election Commission. According to the junta-controlled Global New Light of Myanmar, the two electoral bodies have a signed agreement for cooperation, which was reported as one of the discussion points between the two bodies.
Russia has shown consistent support for the junta-proposed election in Myanmar. Back in May 2023, Sholban Kara-Ool, deputy chair of Russia’s State Duma and the lower house of Russia’s parliament, pledged his support for the regime-proposed election during his meeting with junta boss Min Aung Hlaing and (former) UEC Chair U Thein Soe.
There were some notable quotes given under The Irrawaddy's tweet of the visit.
The only reason one would want to learn from Russian elections is if you want to run elections, unopposed and under an intimidating environment https://t.co/5TaJnjx6ZS
