Monitoring Myanmar Junta-Appointed Union Election Commission: January 2025 Recap

THE MYANMAR JUNTA-APPOINTED UNION ELECTION COMMISSION (UEC) HAS ORGANIZED OR ENGAGED IN VARIOUS SHAM ELECTION-RELATED ACTIVITIES, WHICH WE MONITOR AND UPDATE ON THIS BLOG MONTHLY.

Key Activities

  • UEC organized various coordination meetings with the Rakhine state election commission, the (junta-appointed) Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of Immigration, and state and regional election commissions to accelerate preparations regarding the "election." The meetings involved voter list collection and management.
  • The newly founded Kayah State People's Party (KySPP) submitted its application to register for the election, with pending approval. It was approved to be established as a political party in December 2024. 
  • Also, a new party called the Peace and Development Party (unofficial translation) submitted its application to be established as a political party, with pending approval. 
  • The Myanmar delegation which includes UEC members U Aung Saw Win and U Myint Thein was invited to observe the Belarusian presidential election. They observed the advanced voting process during their trip and met with the Belarusian central election commission chair Mr. Igor Karpenko on 24 January.
