Monitoring Myanmar Junta-Appointed Union Election Commission: August 2024 Recap

THE Myanmar JUNTA-APPOINTED UNION ELECTION COMMISSION (UEC) HAS ORGANIZED OR ENGAGED IN VARIOUS SHAM ELECTION-RELATED ACTIVITIES, WHICH WE MONITOR AND UPDATE ON THIS BLOG Monthly.

UEC accelerated sham election-related activities this month. Most noteworthy activities include:

  • UEC rejected the applications of the New Society Party and Zomi Congress for Democracy Party to register as political parties, based on Article 6 of the Political Party Registration Law. 
  • UEC approved the applications of Unity and Development Party and Socioeconomic Development Party (unofficial translation) to establish as political parties. They became the 13th and 14th newly established parties.
  • UEC approved the application of Kachin State People's Party to register as a political party. KSPP is a merger of the Kachin State Democracy Party (KSDP) with the Unity and Democracy Party of Kachin State and the Kachin Democratic Party in June 2019. It won 1 seat in Pyithu Hluttaw and 3 seats in State Hluttaw in both 2015 (as KSDP) and 2020 elections respectively. 
  • UEC Chair U Ko Ko met the Ambassador of Thailand to Myanmar on August 6 and discussed matters related to cooperation between the two countries for the junta's electoral exercise. 
  • On August 24, UEC Chair U Ko Ko met representatives from registered political parties and briefed UEC's previous and ongoing activities.
