Monitoring the Myanmar Junta-Appointed Union Election Commission: January Recap

The junta-appointed Union Election Commission (UEC) has organized or engaged in various sham election-related activities, which we will regularly monitor and update on this blog.

We source the data from the News section of the UEC website. The following chart shows the summary of UEC activities from January 1 to 31.

Most noteworthy activities include:

  • There were 14 events in January where UEC demonstrated the use of Myanmar Electronic Voting Machine (MEVM) mainly in Mandalay region. (Same events have been organized in 44 out of 45 townships in Yangon region in past months.)
  • It was stated on the UEC website that 12,260 people from 18 townships in Mandalay region attended MEVM demonstration events between January 15 and 30.
  • There was a mention of UEC syncing the CVLMS (Central Voters List Management System) with MEVM. The collection of census data has been one of the most significant activities by the junta as a basis of organizing the sham election.
  • There has been some changes in political party registration law, intended for political parties that will organize throughout the entire Union of Myanmar. Details here.
  • In January, there were two occasions where UEC met the Russian Ambassador to Myanmar and the newly appointed ASEAN Special Envoy to Myanmar to discuss the “election” matters.
  • As of today, there are 45 political parties for which the party formation or re-registration has been approved by the UEC. Updated list here.
