Monitoring the Union Election Commission Appointed by Myanmar Junta: June Recap

THE JUNTA-APPOINTED UNION ELECTION COMMISSION (UEC) HAS ORGANIZED OR ENGAGED IN VARIOUS SHAM ELECTION-RELATED ACTIVITIES, WHICH WE WILL REGULARLY MONITOR AND UPDATE ON THIS BLOG.

We source the data from the News section of the UEC website. The following chart shows the summary of UEC activities from June 1 to 30, 2024.

Most noteworthy activities include:

  • On June 24, UEC Chair U Ko Ko met the Indian Ambassador to Myanmar H.E. Mr. Abhay Thakur and discussed "election" related collaboration between the two countries.
  • UEC organised two rounds of the workshop on "voter list management" along with the junta's Ministry of Home Affairs, General Administration Department, Ministry of Immigration, and State and Region Election Sub-Commissions. The workshop's activities included management of files and folders of the population data; checking and cleaning "e-ID" population data; compiling and enlisting population data using "Admin and DEO software" ; using the Central Voter List Management System (CVLMS), according to the UEC website. The workshop highlights the technical side of the junta's attempt to hold a sham election.
  • A new political party called "Socioeconomic Development Party" (unofficial translation) submitted its application to establish as a political party under the junta-appointed UEC.
